Teams are made of people of different backgrounds, personalities and world views. Enabling these people to work together successfully is not a walk in the park. Every leader needs to look out for the things that can make or break their team. Here are five of them.
Vision
A vision creates direction. A group of people without direction are bound to lose the way and create their own paths. The vision needs to be clear, known and appreciated by all.
Trust
Without trust, team members are suspicious of each other and cannot work together successfully. They feel that someone may be spying on them all the time
The’ I’ Mentality
While there are individuals in a team, great teams think in terms of ‘we’ not ‘I.’ The ‘I’ mentality invites selfish behaviour and putting the individual before the team. Every person on the team needs to put team interest head of their own.
Unreasonable Expectations
Stretch goals are motivating while goals that are out of reach are depressing. The leader needs to constantly evaluate whether their goals are within or outside reach.
Excessive Criticism
A balance between praise and criticism needs to be created. Excessive criticism is like the last straw that broke the camel’s back. Remember to catch someone doing something right and shout about it. Preferably always give negative feedback in private.
